Pushing Up People by Art Williams. A Review

I first encountered Art on video at an Opportunity meeting in 1987. by the time he had finished speaking, I was in. it didn’t matter what it was. I wanted to be a part of a company whose leader was so passionate he lost his voice each time he spoke. He was my first real business mentor.

Art Williams was a simple football coach who needed to earn some extra income. He began selling life insurance, discovering to his horror that the major product, Whole Life, was a major rip off. Thus began a crusade against all of the other life insurance companies, as Art formed his own company. His people sold only Term Insurance, lower in cost and greater in coverage.

  1. Pushing Up People

    The A. L. Williams company soon became the largest seller of life insurance in the world. I believe they still are, but now part of Transamerica. In 1984, he published Pushing Up People, a great book that contained his philosophy of selling, as well as how he believed people should be treated. It remains to this day one of the greatest of all motivational books. Here are a few of the principles from the book.

    People want more from a job than just money,

    Commit to something bigger than your business.

    Be slow to criticize, and always look for reasons to praise.

    Life gives people whatever they expect.

    Leaders set goals in all areas of their life.

    Freedom is possible only when it goes hand in hand with Responsibility.

    You can’t hold anything back if you expect to win.

    Total commitment is the first step to greatness.

    Your business attitude is a direct reflection of the way you look at life.

    Successful people do what it takes, and a little bit more.

    Give your efforts time to compound.

    A leader sees adversity as a challenge and keeps on going.

    Never make a decision about your career based on what happened today.

    Trust and respect buy a loyalty that you can never buy with a salary.
