You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club. – Jack London
Writing is a great pleasure for me, but not everyone has it so easy. Many struggle with coming up with a single, small idea to write about. When you do a blog, the pressure can really build up, because your work takes on the importance of being released into Cyberspace.
Not to worry. Writing is like talking, only you do it with a pen, or a keyboard. Some have trouble writing as fast as they think, but it just takes some practice to keep up. I’ve learned to write very fast as the ideas come pouring out of my mind. As a Game Designer, I’m also am used to being awakened in the middle of the night by an idea that won’t let me get back to sleep.
I’ve been doing some thinking, and I’ve come up with some ideas to help you generate ideas, posts and even stories to keep you up with the demands of your writing challenges. One point that I consider vitally important. Please give credit to your inspirational source, even if they’ve been dead for a thousand years. That’s a big part of Gratitude, and it will pay many dividends.

Diary Journal and Other Blogs
Keep a Diary. You’ll have no idea how much inspiration you’ll get from your daily scriblings about the day’s events. The diary itself must be kept with you at all times. One never knows when inspiration ,or just an interesting perspective on something you do every day.
Visit other Blogs, especially ones that deal with your interests and your niche. Many of them won’t mind if you take inspiration for a post of your own based upon one of their posts. One point. Always give full credit for the source of your inspiration, even if it has no direct relation to the post that inspired it. Bloggers are a great group, and your credit will help them get their word out to new people.

Old Magazines and Writing Forums
Old Magazines. I collect magazines from every decade, back to the 1920’s. The perspective of someone from 1948 is nothing like someone from 2016, but it could be something you’d never have thought of because of the era it was written. How did H. P. Lovecraft get inspiration for his creations? Or Donald Westlake? Or Michael Crichton? Steal the ideas if you want to. Who’s going to know? But a better thing to do is write your own spin on it and make it fresh.
Writing Forums. Here is a gold mine of ideas. Writers go here to ask questions, spit out thoughts, start arguments and generally rant and rave about their work or that of others. There is no way to really steal anything, as it’s just a forum. No, that’s wrong. Don’t steal, just borrow. But I would give someone thanks if you hit upon a really great inspiration.

Wherever You Go, There You Are
Wherever you go, there you are. Your Muse is always with you, and will strike at any time. If you’re at dinner on the Liberty of the Seas on the way to Grand Cayman Island and an idea hits you, write it down! I just picked up a voice recorder, and I’ve been struck with a lot more ideas now that I can make verbal notes anywhere.
I got an idea once for a card game in the bathroom of our plane at 30,000 feet. Writing it took a few more moments than the guy outside waiting really wanted to wait, but I had to finish it before I left the tiny room.

The Food Court
Hang out at the food court of your local mall. Get an iced tea, sit down at a table and put on some headphones attached to your mp3 player. Don’t turn the player on, just pretend to listen. Have your notepad out and just listen to the people around you. It’s a great way to pick up on how people really speak, and those words will come from so many different minds that you’re sure to hit on some ideas to write about.
So there you have it. Some of my favorite ways to gather ideas. Grab some marble composition books and just fill up the pages with your ramblings. I’m on my 3rd notebook in about 2 years. Whatever you do, just relax. It’ll come to you.
